Activities with the Little Ones this Summer

August is a wonderful month to explore, learn, and enjoy the summer. Here are some activities you can do with children following the Montessori philosophy.

  • Sensory exploration in the garden: Summer is perfect for spending time outdoors. In the garden, we can create a sensory exploration area. Place different natural elements such as sand, leaves, flowers, and stones in shallow containers for the children to explore with their hands. This will help develop their senses and natural curiosity.

  • Ice Painting: Ice painting is a refreshing and creative activity that will delight the little ones. Fill ice cube trays with water and a few drops of food colouring. Once frozen, they can use the ice cubes to paint on paper. It’s a unique sensory experience!

  • Water Toys: On hot days, nothing beats playing with water. Fill a small tray or inflatable pool with water and add floating toys, cups, and spoons for them to play and experiment with. This activity is ideal for young children, always under supervision.

  • Outdoor Reading: Creating a reading nook in the garden or park is an excellent way to foster a love for books from an early age. Choose books with large images and bright colours to capture their attention. Reading outdoors makes the experience even more enriching.

  • Practical Life Activities: You can involve the little ones in simple tasks such as watering plants, picking up toys, or washing small items of clothing. These activities teach them independence and everyday skills.

  • Music and Movement: Music is a wonderful tool for child development. Organise music and movement sessions where they can dance, play simple instruments such as maracas or drums, and enjoy different rhythms.

We hope these activities inspire you to spend an August filled with learning and fun with the little ones at home. Remember, the most important thing is to enjoy the time together and allow them to explore and learn at their own pace. Happy summer!
