Around the World: Discovering Kenya.
At Mountain Peak Montessori School, we believe that curiosity about the world begins from the earliest years. Every culture, country, and tradition presents an opportunity for children to broaden their horizons, develop empathy, and gain an understanding of the diversity that surrounds them.
As part of our “Around the World” project, the children in our classroom have embarked on a symbolic journey to Kenya, exploring its geography, wildlife, colours, and culture, always through a playful and sensory approach tailored to their age.
Discovering Kenya: Nature and Wildlife
Kenya is a country renowned for its breathtaking landscapes and unique animals. During the project, the children learned about the African savannah, elephants, giraffes, and lions, using Montessori materials designed to encourage observation, classification, and symbolic play.
Through figures, picture cards, and hands-on activities, the children were able to touch, observe, and compare animals, thereby enhancing their scientific curiosity and understanding of the natural world.
Culture and Creativity
In addition to wildlife and geography, we explored Kenyan culture, including its colours, clothing, music, and traditions. The children took part in activities such as:
Painting patterns inspired by traditional Maasai textiles.
Listening to and moving to the rhythm of African music, developing coordination and rhythmic perception.
Playing with simple percussion instruments, learning about sounds and patterns.
These experiences foster artistic and sensory expression, strengthening the creativity and imagination of the youngest learners.
The “Around the World: Kenya” project has been an enriching experience, allowing our pupils to travel with their imagination, learn through their senses, and connect with other cultures from within their immediate environment.
